The true crime genre has recently gained significant popularity. Many people are fascinated by it — including me. In this blog, I answer the following questions: What is the true crime genre, and why is it popular?

True crime has always interested me. I am particularly interested in the psychology of the perpetrators, which causes me to ask the following questions: how, when, where, and why.

Despite the criticisms, I am convinced that when true crime stories are handled responsibly, they blend entertainment, education, and journalism and hopefully ignite justice for the victims.

The True Crime Genre

True crime refers to a genre of media that focuses on real-life crimes. Typically involving severe criminal acts such as murder, kidnapping, fraud, and other offences.

The true crime genre includes books, documentaries, podcasts, TV shows, and articles. These genres explore the details of criminal cases and the criminals’ motivations. They also investigate the events that led to the crime being solved or not.

The term ‘true crime’ separates the genre from fictional crime narratives. True crime focuses on actual events that have occurred.
